Tastykake Gifts Delivered
Today you can have Tastykake gifts delivered to your door, no matter where you may live, but this wasn't always so. Once upon a time, people had to buy Tastykakes in person. If there's anyone out there reading this who remembers back to 1914 and lived in the Pittsburgh area, they might have bragging rights as to be the oldest person to enjoy the delicious experience of unwrapping their own Tastekake for that is the year the Tasty Baking company was founded.
However, if we are to be accurate the tasty treat of cake and cream didn't yet have a name. That would have to wait until the company moved to Philadelphia in the 1920s when the wife of one of the founding partners unwrapped and bit into her first cake and exclaimed "what a tasty cake!" Somewhere along the way, the C became a K, and Tastykake it was!
A Tastykake Change
Never one to sit on its laurels, the Tastykake continued to evolve, or perhaps we should say take shape. First An experiment with finger-shaped cakes in 1927 produced moist delicate cakes that proved to be so moist and delicate that they fell apart upon being removed from the baking pan. Fortunately, someone suggested "crimping" the cake to give it a more stable shape. And that's when the Krimpet was born.
The 1930s brought the idea that perhaps school kids and workers alike might enjoy opening their lunchboxes and finding an individually wrapped pie for dessert and so individually wrapped fruit pies became a new Tastykake offering along with the new smaller size Juniors that fit into pockets and pocketbooks for snaking on the run. Right on their heels another innovation came along - the Tandy Take, a delicious concoction of cake layered with peanut butter and coated in milk chocolate - almost too beautiful to eat!
Patriotism in Action
The 1940s were dominated by World War II and Tastykake was right in the middle of it, as 203 TastyKake employees headed off to serve in one way or another. And to share the wealth, the company shipped loads of Krimpets and Kandy Kakes as Tandy Takes had become known to the boys on the European and Asian fronts.
By the 1960s, TastyKakes had become more than a Philadelphia phenomenon and so the company went public in 1961. It proved to be a good move because 1965 saw sales double to the tune of $40million, and by the 80s, improved distribution channels meant that although Tastykakes may have left its heart in Philadelphia, lovers of the sweet treats could get freshly baked as far away as New England and Florida.
Tastykakes Gifts All Around
That's the Tastykake story but here's today's good news. If you live in other parts of the country. You no longer have to travel east for a fix of Krimpets, Juniors, or any Tastykake product because The Pennsylvania General Store can deliver Tastykakes to your door, or the door of anyone you want to send Tastykake gifts to.
